Fungal growth in feed can decrease its quality substantially. As the molds thrive in feed, it can consume majority of fat, protein, carbohydrate and even mineral elements, leading subsequently to stuff discolorations, heating, mustiness and biochemical transformations, yielding to the accumulation of toxic substances in most cases. Fat is often added to poultry diets to increase the energy content, this is especially the case in high density broiler diets. In addition, if fish meal is used, it is high in fat. To help keep feed from going bad, which is common in high fat products, antioxidants are commonly added to the diet. Compounds with antioxidant properties include ethoxyquin, butylhydroxytoluene (BHT), butylhydroxyanisole (BHA), vitamin C, and vitamin E.

At the same time as making gains in production and efficiency, the industry has had to maximise the health and well-being of the birds and minimise the impact of the industry on the environment. The use of feed additives has been an important part of achieving this success.

As antibiotics continue to be phased out of livestock production, alternative feed amendments have received increased interest not only from a research standpoint but for commercial application. Most of the emphasis to date has focused on food safety aspects, particularly on lowering the incidence of foodborne pathogens in livestock. Several candidates are currently either being examined or are already being implemented in commercial settings. Among these candidates are chemical compounds such as formaldehyde. Formaldehyde has historically been used to inhibit Salmonella in feeds during feed processing. Currently, there are several commercial products available for this purpose. This review will cover both the historical background, current research, and prospects for further research on the poultry gastrointestinal tract and feeds treated with formaldehyde.

Mycotoxins are toxins that occur naturally, are generated by particular molds (fungi), and appear in food. They can be the source of various negative health effects and can be a significant health danger to livestock, horses, companion animals, and humans. Animal feeds assume a prominent part in the worldwide food industry as they make the production of commodities of animal origin globally. Farms or industrial feed mills can create the feeds in mixtures. The safety of the feed is a given for food security and personal and animal health. Similar to the production of food, feed production also involves in a quality assurance safety system.

It’s common for mildew to contaminate feed, mildew is everywhere, we can say all feed can be as existed environment for mildew, According to the UN FAO estimates, more than 25% food and feed were contaminated by mildew in global each year. With development of feed industry, in process of production, stock, sell, a large number of feed products and feed material are easy to be contaminated by mildew, then cause mold. So the problem that feed was mold and mycotoxin contamination can not be ignored in the feed industry and livestock production. As we all known, Mycotoxins are harmful to humans and animals. After Feed contaminated by mildew, it will cause two hazards: one is that mildew will cause deterioration of feed, feed which was contaminated by mildew, its feed nutrition will be reduced, then cause huge economic losses; second is that after feed was contaminated by mildew, except make livestock poisoning to dead by mycotoxins, the more serious is to reduce immunity system and production performance of livestock and poultry, long-term sub-health state, cause many immunity failure and serious disease which frequently happen and difficult to control, Meanwhile it is harm to human health through meat, eggs, milk etc other food chain. 

Finding a feed preservation solution that protects the nutritional quality of grains and livestock feed is difficult. Mold is especially difficult to eliminate without destroying nutrients.Sure, you can follow storage tips and best practices down to the letter, but when it’s all said and done agriculture operations still lose millions of dollars each year to mold damage.
